A suicide is defined as an act of violence against oneself followed by traumatic repercussions to the victim’s relations. It is no different than any other attempt against the physical body which results in its demise. Yet, Spiritism, which is neither judgmental of suicides nor condemns the act, is especially concerned with this behavior. Why? What is there in a suicidal attempt, and worst, in this form of death, which places it in a category of its own and provoke so much agitation? It turns out the human definition of suicide is incomplete at best. By spiritual standards, a suicide is a violent act not against oneself but rather against the Self, followed by perispiritual destabilization of the individuals related to the victim which stretch far beyond a traumatic event. Júlio Padovan is an Associate Professor and full-time researcher in New York City. He is a lecturer for both the physical sciences and the Spiritist Doctrine, and he is particularly interested in studying the solid logical foundation upon which Spiritist concepts are built as well as in creating associations among those same concepts.
