SPYC Winter-Spring 2018 Program – Youth

Winter-Spring

The Youth group will meet on the 2^nd and 4^th Saturday of the month and the group will be flexible to skip a session when we have a special guest speaker at the SSB (Please check with the coordinator, Alba Morales, about meeting dates).

We will be covering 2  main topics:

• Technology and Spirituality: how social media is connected to the spirit world and how it influences us.
• How non-religious and/or non-spiritual people can be good individuals and practice charity?: it is necessary to receive religious education to do good? The characteristics of a Moral Person (The Spirits Book, part 3, chapter 12).

Other topics that may be covered based on the teens suggestions:

• An act of love everyday: concrete and realistic ways to practice charity in our day to day lives – following Jesus’ maxim “without charity there is no salvation”.
• It’s hard being young!: teenagers and their relationships with family, friends, teachers, especial friends and God – a perspective of the Law of Society (The Spirits Book, part 3, chapter 7).
• When bad news gets too much: learning to deal with negativity and bad news in social media and the community under the light of Spiritism. (Practice of centering prayer and meditation)
• The language of love: learning how to comfort friends that are not spiritual or religious. (Open your heart and find Happiness by Joanna de Angelis. Chapter 12: Loving words and Advice / Happy Life by Joanna de Angelis: several chapters).

 OTHER ACTIVITIES

• Teens Movie Day: Watching a movie on a day or night that we don’t have service at the SSB. We will bring pillows/blankets to make it comfortable (maybe a healthy snack?) and watch an enlighten movie and discuss it afterwards. This activity will be only for teens – parents are welcome to drop off/pick up them before and after the activity. Date TBD. Suggestions for movies are:

• Short videos after youth session: Teens will have the chance to create short videos about the lesson’s topic to post them in the SSB FB and/or website. The idea is to reach out to other teens and bring them a hopeful and faithful perspective of life.
• Reaching out to the community: Visiting Ronald McDonald Foundation to cook meals for the families and/or distribute goodie bags.
• Participating in the 12^th Spiritist Symposium in D.C – youth group – April 21st
• Participating in the Spiritist Youth encounter in Washington D.C on July 7^th and 8^th (organized by SSVA)
• SSB Overnight Youth Summer Camp – 2 days and 2 nights at the Egloffs (tentative place). Topic TBD. Youth will spend a weekend during the summer studying, playing and creating bonds of love with themselves, their friends and God. Rita Egloff graciously offered her place and she is also volunteering as educator. Tentative weekends: July 13, July 21, August 4, August 11.
